In cooperation with the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium in Straelen, the Kunststiftung NRW - the Foundation for Art and Culture NRW - annually awards the Übersetzerpreis der Kunststiftung NRW - the Translator Prize of the Foundation for Art and Culture NRW - endowed with € 25 000.

This prize acknowledges outstanding achievements in literary translations from German into another language or from another language into German. Supporting international cultural exchange and strengthening international understanding are further considerations in lending the prize.

Since 2001, the prize was awarded two consecutive times to a translator translating into German, then once to a translator translating from the German language.

Until 2007 the prize was awarded every two years. Since then it is being awarded annually.

The foundation appoints five independent jury members, all literary translators or critics, to select the prize winner.

Translators, publishers, editors, literary critics and interested readers may make suggestions.
