Pierre Deshusse (Lyon, France) receives the 2009 ÜBERSETZERPREIS DER KUNSTSTIFTUNG NRW – TRANSLATOR PRIZE OF THE FOUNDATION FOR ART AND CULTURE NRW

Pierre Deshusses was born in Lyon in 1952. He has published more than fifty translations (novels, stories, theatre plays and essays) by German-speaking authors such as Goethe, Kleist, Jean Paul, Heine, Hofmannsthal, Doderer, Brecht, Ernst Weiß and Karl Krauss but also by contemporary writers such as Karen Duve, Markus Werner, Alexander Kluge and Helmut Krausser.

To honour the richness, diversity and quality of his work, the jury unanimously decided to award Pierre Deshusses the 2009 Übersetzerpreis der – Translator Prize of the Foundation for Art and Culture NRW – with particular consideration of his translation of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's stories "Wege und Begegnungen" into French ("Chemins et rencontres").

The 2009 Übersetzerpreis der Kunststiftung NRW – Translator Prize of the Foundation for Art and Culture NRW – was awarded on 3 October 2008 to the French translator Pierre Deshusses, Lyon.

Né à Lyon en 1952, Pierre Deshusses a publié une cinquantaine de traductions (romans, nouvelles, théâtre, essais), notamment de grands auteurs classiques comme Goethe, Kleist, Heine, Jean Paul Hofmannsthal, Doderer, Brecht, Ernst Weiss, Karl Kraus, et d’écrivains contemporains comme Karen Duve, Markus Werner, Alexander Kluge ou Helmut Krausser.

C’est donc pour récompenser l’ampleur, la diversité et la haute qualité de son travail que le jury a proposé, à l’unanimité, de décerner à Pierre Deshusses le ÜBERSETZERPREIS DER KUNSTSTIFTUNG NRW 2009, en particulier pour sa traduction de «Chemins et rencontres» («Wege und Begegnungen») de Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
